Description

Original German WWII Paratrooper Gravity Knife Late War- Offered here is a rare late-war Model 2 gravity knife, known as the "Fallschirmjäger Messer," issued to German paratroopers during World War II. This specimen is a testament to its historical significance and remains in remarkable overall condition, preserving its original features with precision.
All the original springs are intact, and the wooden grips are in excellent condition, maintaining their original luster. The blade is securely fitted, ensuring a tight and functional mechanism. This late-war production "all-carbon-steel" Fallschirmjäger-Messer continues to be in excellent working order, a testament to its quality craftsmanship.
This specific knife represents a scarce late-war Model 2 variant with all-metal parts, including the blade, constructed from high-carbon steel instead of stainless steel. In the early stages of production, Model 1 Fallschirmjäger-Messers featured high-quality stainless steel, but as the war progressed and stainless steel became scarce in Germany, "regular" high-carbon steel was utilized for non-essential wartime production. This knife measures approximately 6-1/8 inches (15.5 cm) when closed, with a blade length of about 4 inches (10.2 cm). The majority of its metal parts retain around 80% of the original bluing, providing a sense of authenticity. The blade remains sharp and the tip is intact, serving as a functional tool. The late-war carbon steel blade is intentionally unmarked.
The blade smoothly deploys from the handle with a satisfying thud, demonstrating its continued functionality. It's worth noting that the spring, which holds the blade in place, has had its rivet replaced with a period-appropriate screw, resulting in a slightly loose fit that doesn't entirely secure the blade in place. However, the knife opens and closes without any issues, showcasing its enduring usability.
Considering its age, this Model 2 paratrooper knife is in excellent shape. It can be disassembled and reassembled with ease, reflecting its durable construction. The heavy-duty marlin spike, approximately 3-3/4 inches (9.5 cm) long, adds to its versatility.
The knife is correctly stamped with various production numbers, denoted as "123," in three distinct areas, confirming its authenticity. The original hardwood handle features four steel pins and a D-ring shackle on the pommel. Despite minor scuff marks on the wood handle scales, which are mentioned for accuracy, all handle components remain securely fastened with no play, contributing to its very good condition.
In conclusion, this Fallschirmjäger Messer paratrooper knife is a rare and exceptional piece of history, meticulously preserved and ready to be appreciated by collectors and enthusiasts alike.
